Saul Bass

Saul Bass was born may 8, 1920 in New York city he passed on April 25th 1996 in Los Angeles, California he was 75 years of age. He started work in 1954 and stopped in 1995 he worked as a graphic designer and a film maker. He made many amazing title sequences to films. He studied at the Art Student's League in Manhattan until attending classes with Gyorgy Kepes at Brooklyn College. Before he was making films he was making prints for film ad's in Hollywood. After this he began collaborating films with Otto preminger, Carmen Jones, Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese.

For my project i am doing a thriller title sequence and an Saul Bass has done title sequences for thrillers such as:

  • Phsyco

  • Vertigo

  • Anatomy of a murder

  • Cape ear
He has also done others title sequences like:

  • Ocean's eleven

  • Goodfella's

  • Around the world in 80 day's

I looked at a few of his thriller opening title sequences to give me ideas for my own title sequence. Phsyco helped me allot from the text point of view when i first watched it i had many ideas running through my head of what text i could use on my Title sequence.

Vertigo is a very intense title sequence when i was watching it i was wanting to watch the film to see what would happen in it. I really wanted my title sequence to have the same effect on people.

Anatomy of murder made me realise that you don't have to have real people in a title sequence to make an impact animated can have the same affect. Also i really like the way Saul did not go over the top and make it to flashy it is very plain but, interesting at the same time.

SOUND- our title sequence the only sound is going to be a jewellery box playing. We chose this because it reminds you of childhood and women. It is going to be a ballerina jewellery box and the jewellery box is going to be the second scene of our title sequence.

CHARACTERS- There will be five characters in our title sequence.

Leah Hunt- Will play one of the four women who get kidnapped she nearly gets away but at the last minute she falls over and gets dragged away by the killer. We got this idea from the preview of quarantine.
Nichola Daley- Will play one of the women who get kidnapped she is going to tied down to a chair with her making running down her face it will be ironic. We kind of got this idea from the end of the music video to Rhianna-Disturbia.
Monica Rabadia- Will also play one of the kidnapped women she is going to be running at the end of the title sequence with Leah Hunt. When Leah falls Monica will look back and then keeps on running.
Emily Gladding- Will play a women who was kidnapped by the killer. Emily is going to be the first one killed she will be lying dead face first on the floor.
LOCATION- We had many ideas for the location our main criteria for the location was to make it look abandoned and dark. We were thinking of a school as we had easy access to it but then we decided not to go with it as a school would not look abandoned. We then had the idea of having as sink and tiles so we thought of a changing room. This is because they normally look dirty and abandoned.
COLOUR- At first we were going to video the whole film in black and white and just have the red blood in colour. Then we started t change our mind we are still not sure if we are going to go with black and white or colour. So we have decided to film it all in colour so if we decide to change it we can.

Update on title sequence

Instead of the serial killer being a man we have to decided to make it a woman. This idea came up as we have been thinking about names for the film. The one we like most is A Dolls House there is also a book with this title and this book is about feminism. This gave us the idea for the Woman serial killer.

Ideas for the story behind the title sequence

For my groups title piece we are doing a thriller. The idea we are working on at the moment for the story is about a schizophrenic private detective who dislikes women who turn to surgery but, not life saving surgery the procedure that women turn to, to make them self look "perfect" as they think. He believes that you should be grateful for what you have got as he has 3rd degree burns on his back from a fatal accident when he was a child. This has not only given him scared him physically but also mentally this is why he turns to murder. He rings four girls and pretends to be a new model agency opening looking for new clients.
All of the girl of course agree to go an get their picture taken they are in for a lot more. He take them to an old factory and begin to torture them. Two girls try to get away before he finishes them off as they had to watch him murder the other two girls. One falls over and gets dragged back why the other keeps on running !.

Vertigo title sequence.

This is vertigo it is a title sequence that saul bass has done. We were showed it in class and we quite like the colours in it and we like the music the sequence would not have worked with out it.

Psycho

I decided to put this on my blog as it does not have a people or objects in it, its just writing. The music makes this opening title sequence good as it kind of gives you a feel of what the film is going to be like. Saul Bass does not just have one style when he is creating his title sequences his work is varried.

Anatomy of murder.

Saul Bass created this opening title sequence, i put it on my blog to show that Saul Bass has also done animated opening title sequences. Me and my group decided quite early on that we did not want to do this as we thought it would be more of a challenge and more fun to film. Also we thought that filming it with real people would give it more of a tense and eerie feel.

Apologies !

I stated that that the posting of the ring title sequence was the actual 'The Ring' title sequence. I have found out that the film 'The Ring' does not have a title sequence this is a piece of student work. They created a title sequence for 'The Ring' as a project so sorry if it caused any confusion.

The ring !

This is the title sequence that gave my group and i the ideas for our title sequence. We all liked the writing and the way the writing flashed as we wanted a similar effect on our opening sequence. We also thought the way it had been edited was excellent it made the sequence really eerie and that is what we wanted ours to be like.
